The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday that is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. It is a time for families to come together, honor their ancestors, and enjoy delicious food, including the famous rice dumplings, also known as zongzi. The history of the Dragon Boat Festival dates back to the Warring States period in China, over 2,000 years ago. It is said to have originated from the legend of Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet and minister who lived during the Zhou Dynasty. Qu Yuan was exiled from his homeland, and during his exile, he wrote many poems expressing his love for his country.
When Qu Yuan learned that his homeland had been invaded, he threw himself into the Miluo River in despair. The local people, who admired him greatly, raced to the river in their boats to try and save him. They beat their drums and splashed their paddles in the water to scare away the fish and evil spirits that might harm Qu Yuan’s body.
Today, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated with dragon boat races, where teams of paddlers race their colorful boats to the beat of drums and the cheers of the crowd. It is also a time for families to gather and enjoy traditional foods, such as rice dumplings. Rice dumplings, or zongzi, are pyramid-shaped parcels made of glutinous rice and wrapped in bamboo leaves. They can be filled with a variety of savory or sweet ingredients, such as pork, mushrooms, chestnuts, or red bean paste.
