The VW-1 flame test chamber consists of a large combustor, a control part, a combustion nozzle, a solenoid valve, a high-pressure igniter, a sample fixture for electric wires, a gas pipe, a gas source, an internal and external flame regulating device, and a signal control line. The whole process of the VW-1 flame test device is fully automatic, such as: electronic ignition, stop time, combustion time, combustion times can be automatically completed. Delay time just press the foot switch. The combustion chamber adopts aluminum alloy frame, A3 paint shell and visible tempered glass door.
Turn on power and set the flame time, stop time and the number of times of combustion.
Press the air source button to adjust the flow rate to adjust the flame of the torch to meet the requirements of the test; Do the test according to the vertical combustion test described below.
After the test, press the “exhaust” button to drain the gas in the combustion cabinet.
Before the test, connect the pressure regulating valve for the rubber hose of the liquefied petroleum tank, then connect the signal control line, connect the power switch of the control box, check the connection is correct, and pay attention to whether there is any leakage.
If there is no air leakage on VW-1, the power switch can be opened to the position.
Open the cylinder valve, unscrew the pressure regulating valve switch, the pressure table of the acetylene pressure reducing valve indicates the pressure should be in 0.01~ 0.02mpa , if more than 0.02mpa will be dangerous, there may be leakage phenomenon.
After the test, turn off the power switch and the main valve of the gas cylinder, and confirm that there is no burners on fire before leaving the site.

VW-1 Flame Test Method: Adjust the flame height, put the flame tip under the specimen, burn it for 15 seconds and extinguish it for 15 seconds. What are the differences between UL1581 VW-1 wire test and UL94 V-0 test ? What’s test machine difference between VW-1 /FT1 and UL 94 V-0 flame test ?
There are 12 types of UL94: HB, V-0, V-1, V-2, 5VA, 5VB, VTM-0, VTM-1, VTM-2, HBF, HF-1, HF-2. UL94 grade is the most widely used standard for flammability tests for electrical wire and cables. UL 94 VW-1 flame test is used to evaluate the ability of materials to extinguish after being ignited. According to the burning speed, burning time, anti – droplet ability and whether the droplet burns or not, there are many evaluation methods.
A number of values can be obtained for each measured material based on color or thickness. When selecting a material for a product, the UL grade shall meet the thickness requirement of the wall part of the plastic part. UL grade should be reported together with the thickness value. It is not enough to report UL grade without thickness. The flame-retardant grade of plastics is gradually increased from HB, V-2, V-1, V-0, 5VB to 5VA.
HB: The lowest flame retardant rating in UL94 standard. Requires a combustion rate of less than 40 mm/min for samples 3 to 13 mm thick; For samples less than 3 mm thick, the combustion rate is less than 70 mm/min; Or put out before the 100mm mark.
V-2: After two 10-second combustion tests on the sample, the residual flame & residual flame is extinguished within 60 seconds. Falling particles can ignite cotton.
V-1: After two 10-second combustion tests on the sample, the residual flame & residual flame is extinguished within 60 seconds. Dripping particles should not ignite cotton.
V-0: After two 10-second combustion tests on the sample, the residual flame & residual flame is extinguished within 30 seconds. Dripping particles should not ignite cotton.

Determination Criteria :
For electric wire and cables industry: V-2, V-1, V-0, 5VA,5VB of UL 94 evaluates the materials used for electric wire. Standard samples shall be made with test materials when testing, and shall not be marked on the electric wire. VW-1, VW-2 and FT-1 FT-2 examine the wire itself. After passing the test, the corresponding grade can be marked on the VW-1 computer cable.
The flame retardant of the wire is completely different from the flame retardant of UL94. For example, an insulating material can pass through the V-0 of UL94 but not necessarily through the VW-1. In addition, UL 94 is the flame retardant insulation material, and the requirements of flame retardant wire is generally in UL 758, UL 1581. The objects is different. So the flame retardant in V-0, V-1 and so on UL 94 is not flame retardant at all; There is no “V-0” on the AWM wire.
0. The VW-1 /FT1 and the V-0 combustion test in UL 94 are very different in equipment:
1. The height and temperature of the flame are different.
2. The methane flow rates used were also different.
3. Methane has a different back pressure.
4. There are also differences in the volume of the combustion box: VW-1 requires more than 4 cubic meters, while V-0 only requires more than 0.5 cubic meters

6. Combustion results: V-0 requires recording residual burning time, while VW-1 does not.
However, Test conditions of 5V combustion and VW-1 combustion in UL94 are similar to the test method and relatively close. Both VW-1 flame test and UL94 combustion test equipment should refer to ASTM5025, ASTM5027. UL1581 and UL94 are only test methods. The requirements of test equipment must be in accordance with ASTM standard.
At present, many domestic plastic UL94 fire propagation test chamber is not equipped with a special methane flowmeter. The manufacturer often replaced by air flowmeter, resulting in a great difference ! There is also no u-type back pressure gauge. More importantly, there is no flame temperature measurement system.

The flow of methane requires different: HB, V, VMT gas flow is 105ml/min, backpressure 10mm water column or equivalent pressure｜The 5V gas flow rate is 965ml/min, 125±25mm water column or equivalent pressure｜VW-1 vertical-specimen flame test is the same as the 5V level back pressure in UL94: gas flow is 965ml/min, 125±25mm water column or equivalent pressure.
Take a 457 mm long sample from the finished cable sample and fix it vertically in the center of the metal cover. At the bottom of the case, lay a layer of flat cotton layer with thickness of 6~25 mm.
The upper surface of the cotton layer is 229~241 mm away from point B. Point B is the vertex of the test flame blue inner cone contact specimen.
The total height of the test flame is adjusted to approximately 100~125 mm, the height of the blue inner cone is 38 mm, and the temperature at its apex shall be 816℃ or higher when measured by a chrome-aluminum (ni-cr and ni-mn-al) thermocouple.
Adjust the combustion nozzle to the vertical wire sample at a 20° Angle, and lay a layer of untreated cotton with a thickness of 6~25 mm around the base of the combustion lamp.
Adjust the nozzle (point A) of the combustion nozzle to A distance of 38mm from point b. point B is the intersection point between the extension line of the axis line of the combustion nozzle and the outer surface of the sample, and also the contact point between the apex of the flame blue inner cone on the front surface of the sample.
Use an unreinforced 60-pound (94g/m2) piece of kraft paper 13 mm wide and 0.1 mm thick, with one side glued as indicator flag. Moisten the coated kraft paper and stick it to the sample.
Wrap the coated surface of kraft paper around the upper end of the sample, and its lower edge should be 254 mm above point B, that is, the flame blue inner cone touching the sample.
Stick both ends of the strip together and trim into a small indicating flag that protrudes 19 mm in the direction of the test cover on the back of the sample, parallel to the edges of both sides of the test cover.
The lower fixture used for the sample maintains a distance of more than 76mm from the nearest point B in the vertical direction.
Open the air supply valve of the combustion nozzle, open for 15 seconds, close for 15 seconds, repeat the same action for 5 times for automatic fire supply of the sample.
If any sample after any of the five times of fire is burnt or charred (carbon black can be wiped out with cloth or fingers brown charred can be ignored) more than 25%, it can be determined that the cable can spread the flame along the length direction.
If at any time any sample releases flame or incandescent particles or flame fly droplet and ignites the cotton on the base plate of the test cover, it can be determined that the cable can spread flame to the surrounding flammable material.
If the continuous combustion time of any sample after five times of flame supply from the nozzle is longer than 60 seconds, it can be determined that the cable can spread the flame to the surrounding flammable materials.
254 mm long sample taken from finished wire, cable, cord or core sample is fixed in the center of the test cover according to its radial axis.
When the flat specimen is tested, the wide-side plane remains vertical and the gas flame is directed toward the center of the wide-side bottom. Sample bracket 560 mm apart, the spacing of sample bracket is 230 mm.
The nozzle of the combustion nozzle should protrude 102 mm above the air inlet. When the nozzle of the combustion nozzle is in the vertical state, the combustion nozzle is away from the sample.
The total height of the test flame is adjusted to about 100~125mm. The height of the blue inner cone is 38mm and the temperature at its apex shall be 816℃ or higher when measured by a chrome-aluminum thermocouple.
Position the burner nozzle perpendicular to the bottom of the test line. A layer of untreated cotton 6~25mm thick is placed around the base of the burner.
Finally, the radial axis of the burner nozzle is adjusted to be in the vertical plane of the vertical crosscutting point of the sample.
Inclined blowtorch applies a test flame to sample, maintains it for 30 seconds and then quickly returns to the baffle to remove the flame from sample.
The tilt torch applies a test flame to the center point of the sample and removes the flame from the sample.
Both movements must be completed quickly so that the weight does not flow around the sample. Observe and record specimen carbonization length.
At the same time, observe and record whether the sample is scattered with any particles and droplets during and after the fire supply.
If the total length of carbonization of the sample exceeds 100mm, it can be judged that the modified wire, cable, cord or core can be delayed on its length.
If, at any time, any sample is scattered with burning or red particles or droplets of burning liquid, the blowtorch is ignited and the cotton on the test surface is tested, it can be determined that the wire, power supply, cord or core can delay the ignition of flammable materials nearby.
As the temperature rise is related to gas pressure and flame size, please adjust the flame (700±3℃ requires 54 ±2 seconds) before the test.
